And Selena Gomez went for the high drama in a sheer white gown at the Met Costume Gala Monday night.

Paying homage to the Bible's Queen Esther, the devout Christian wore a gauzy, white layered dress. While the fans admired her trailing gown, they were less impressed by her make-up.

Indeed Twitter was abuzz with criticism of the 25-year-old's look - with fans saying she had overdone the bronzer.

'Who did this to Selena?' questioned one fan, while others shared memes comparing the former Disney darling to Ross From Friends, who in one memorable episode experiments with fake tan.

'I'm so stressed for Selena,' wrote another.

Her look, which some felt was too bronzed, was created using Kiehl's products, by celebrity make-up artist Hung Vanngo.

Once inside the gala, Selena seemed to be enjoying her night out.

Smiling, she greeted a number of her celebrity friends inside the exhibition, including Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid.

As she gave the sister of the ex-Bella Hadid a hug, it was clear there was no blood between the duo.

Instagram the designer revealed that Selena's favorite Bible verses was stitched into a special part of the dress.

Mondays Met Gala, fondly known as 'The Biggest Night in Fashion', brought out all of the biggest screens, stages, and styles.

The Wintour Costume Center, the medieval galleries at the main location, and the Cloisters, uptown.

This year's theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, following the last year's Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between and 2016's Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology.
